Mrs. Gene Stratton-Porter has carried out this idea and really unearthed a "Crock of Gold" for the lover of the beautiful in fiction. It is a charming tale of the two greatest things in the world, Love and Friendship, with delicate pen pictures of "God's Country" interwoven. The touch of nature that makes the whole world kin was never better exemplified than in this story of Dannie, Jimmy and Mary, who lived and loved by the banks of the Wabash. A book to be thankful for and to remember all one’s life.

I have read this story three times, each time enjoying it more. These people, caught in a bitter triangle, are presented with their faults as well as their virtues. The story touches upon the sentimental but escapes the mawkish. There is a completeness to the characters. Jimmy is a weakling, not a monster; I have known two men such as he. Danny's gallantry may be old-fashioned, a thing far removed from today's mores, but it enriches his character. And at the last, it speaks to us out of time, because we can see ourselves in each. You know, I just might read it again this summer.Product details

At the Foot of the Rainbow Gene StrattonPorter 9783849688295 Books Reviews
Liked the way Gene developed these characters. As dysfunctional as they all were,I couldn't help but like them. Great read about the tragedy & reconciliation of relationships. At times had bit of a problem with the vernacular. The plot definitely held my interest. Again a great read!
I really enjoyed learning about how she came to write some of her books. She was an excellent writer, and it is almost as if you are there in the scenes with her. I have read several of her books and plan to read them all if possible.
This story has some racist views. I had read it once as a teen-ager and could only remember part of it. I think I had picked out the parts I liked best - descriptions of the outdoors, the love story in it, etc - and forgotten the other parts I didn't like about it. I am pretty sure I will not be reading it again but will donate it to our city library for their annual sale.
If you enjoy literature of the early 20th century which holds truths as well as entertainment, try a novel by Jean Stratton Porter. At the Foot of the Rainbow, offers a wholesome story of love, love lost, and the plight of life in the early 1900's. It's certainly worth the time to appreciate excellent penmanship and creativity from a woman far ahead of her time.
What a precious story of friendship, love and delight. Sweet friendship between Jimmy and Dannie. Dannie does all he can to help Jimmy, but he can't save his soul. And Jimmy doesn't love like Dannie. Wonderful, wise account of two friends and one woman.
What can I say about this wonderful Author that has not been said before. This wonderful woman has delighted me with her great stories. Of great heroes and heroines, people that you find have integrity and wonderful goodness. all her books have a special place in my library.
When I was 10, I discovered Stratton-Porter's book, A Girl of the Limberlost. I cannot even count the number of times I read that book, and my love for it continues today.
At the Foot of the Rainbow reinforces my belief that Mrs. Stratton-Porter is a most gifted author. Her body of work, produced while she was wife, mother, student, produced in a time when "women of quality" didn't do much more than care for home and husband, rivals that of any of today's liberated women who write prolifically but not necessarily well.
The characters, Jim, Danny and Mary are what some would call "country bumpkins" but in Stratton-Porter's hands, they are brought to flesh and blood and one cares deeply about what will become of them.
I urge anyone who is looking for good literature with no vulgarity to acquaint yourself with this author.
